Falafel is my hero

A very classy act by Falafel indeed. I'd like to think I would do the same thing in his shoes, but a word of caution to tournament players: make sure that when you want to make a gesture like this, it's OK with the tournament director. In some cases, the director may feel that the need to keep the bracket moving takes precedence over your wish to play the forfeited match to conclusion.
I found myself involved in a similar situation many years ago when I experienced extended travel delays on my way to a Pittsburgh tournament. I had signed up for the afternoon start in the Masters, but had to switch to the evening, and as it turned out I was more than an hour late even for that. Although I kept the tournament staff updated, they could obviously only hold my spot for so long, and by the time I arrived Ray Fogerlund had purchased my spot and was sitting down to play. When Ray realized what had happened, though, he immediately offered to give up his spot and let me play after all - a classy gesture I still appreciate a decade later.
