How often does this come up with even mildly competent opposition? Seems that it has to be a pretty unusual position for the leader at 2a8a to double when he could still be gammoned.

I don't think I've ever encountered a situation in live play where the gammon value was significant greater than 1. Now, I don't play long matches much. But even if we restrict attention to matches of 9 points or more, I'd guess that this comes up less than 1 in a 1000 live matches.
