I don't remember considering Ray's play OtB and I'm sure that if I had I, too, would have chosen the wrong play. In retrospect (aka thanks to XG) it's easy to see why slotting comes out on top. Other than the timing issues you mentioned we also slot a solid six prime and complete it if we aren't hit. This will allow us quite a few turns to keep it and hope to weaken our opponent's position significantly.
