Any ideas for bettering my study technique

I have tried 2 basic books. Robertie 501 & kits encyclopedia. And although I feel illuminated from both, robertie fails completely to teach u how to approach positions very similar to the ones he has in the book, but essentially different. Kit's book I found excellent, but it is just 200 positions and the way I chose to study comes from the way that book was written. It seems much more efficient to me to study an area of the game by moving a checker or more around and trying to understand how the winning percentages change. The other way just chooses randomly positions that do not fit together.
Some time has passed after reading both. I Can say for sure that what I got from Robertie was a few ideas that I never thought so far. But what stayed with me as long term knowledge from that book, came again from my own games and experimentation when I tried applying the principles I read in his book. With kit I could grasp the whole issue that he discussed as he provided there the reference positions and I did not had to hope finding similar positions in my game to practice. So I thought that kits encyclopedia way of studying a matter is much much better. Unfortunately the majority of books/articles/online material are written in a different way. And some online material of this type while excellent does not fit my budget.
But the more I write this post the more I realize u r right. Maybe not all the bg books/material suit me, but I will study the backgammon material available that is closer to the method I describe above and seem to examine an area closely bit by bit and continue in parallel studying alone. I can now see clearly more benefits from that, just like after performing a rollout!
