The best non-anchor breaking play (after some thought) becomes crystallized in my mind: clear the midpoint and leave opp no jokers. The upside of 13/7, 8/5 is that it saves a 6 (from burial) but that only works when not hit AND (more importantly?) when the next roll is in {61, 62}. Just make the (modern) conventional play of 13/7, 13/8.
The anchor breaking option leaves more to consider: three plays to be specific. 21/15, 21/16 has the (standard) plus of being easier to break contact if missed. 21/10 gets one checker to safety but leaves the other to fend for itself. 21/15, 8/3 is in some ways a tweener as next turn a good roll is 6x making the 15-point -- not quite escaped. Technically it adds the 5th homeboard point in the likely attack cases. Practically (against some humans) it adds doubt in opp's mind as to whether (and which) loose attacks are worth the risk.
If it's close with any 21/15 (+ stop there) play vs. any play that doesn't leave a checker on the 15-point, the duplicated 3's (hits and covers) will swing the choice. Putting everything together (possibly including QF) and the bold split+cover gets my vote.
21/15, 8/3
