You certainly are doing something right to attract players. But knowing Roberite,KG, Magriel, and Senk as well as I do, I believe each one of them would vote to have clocks. Would you agree to have clocks if each of these players asked you to have them?
If there are physically handicapped, older or younger, you could extend the clock time for them as you yourself have pointed out.
Although I agree that the most compelling reason to have clocks is to prevent delays by virtue of slow play, I believe another important reason, not mentioned often enough, should be a key factor in favoring clocks. That is the equal playing field argument. The fact that the amount of time a player can consider a move can be an important determinant of how good a player's decision is. When you don't have clocks one player can use more time than the other, an unfair advantage, as well as opening the door to both subjective and objective accusations of slow play and responses to playing slow by also playing slowly.
How about having a vote by open players at your registration? If the majority favor clocks wouldn't that satisfy your desire to be as representative of the player interest as possible? It is possible there might be some cancellations, but I believe very few, if any are likely. You would be doing something positive and important for the future of tournament backgammon, and much appreciated by the players that do most of the attending.
