"eliminates such ridiculous mistakes as ...... or forgetting to roll and hitting the clock when your opponent is bearing off and finally opens his board."
This should be written into clock rules that a player cannot be forced to forfeit his roll for punching the clock prior to rolling. Of then someone might do it every turn to be a nuisance and any director with a clue would stop it, but certainly one caution should be enough before the player is then penalized.
One of the objections newer players have to clocks is things like this. We should never attempt to take advantage of players' mechanical clock errors.
Over the years the following has happened to me playing with a clock.
1) I picked and passed in the bearoff, hitting the clock with the borne off checker, and then realizing that I hadn't removed the hit checker from the board. My polite opp, allowed me to place his checker on the bar as intended.
2) After being closed out for several moves, I've twice hit the clock in error and one person made me forfeit my roll. This was back in the days when Bronstein clocks were new. I asked for a ruling and the director ruled against me. This opp will never ever get a break from me for an illegal move or procedural error. I don't forgive and forget what I feel was a cheap shot taken at me.
3) Several times players have hit the clock after they've been closed out when there's now a spot to to enter and I always tell them that they can roll and it should NEVER be possible to forfeit one's roll.
