I think Leo has this right. For those who play well, this format is like a DMP Challenge, but with a twist. The design (deliberately?) favors intermediate and advanced players who understand the need for aggressive or automatic cubes. They will have a huge advantage over any naive opponents they are lucky enough to draw.
As Paul Weaver has documented, some 90% of all backgammon players outplay their opponents. There may be a subtle trap awaiting those who try to leverage their superior ability, should they elect to delay making an early double.
