When White's midpoint is stripped, plopping down a blot in the her outfield is almost like giving her no shots. O.K., not quite true, but close enough to be a pretty good rule of thumb. If White had a spare on her midpoint, I'd stop and think a bit and weigh the two alternatives. Here, beyond taking a second to make sure that there wasn't a third legal play that I'd missed, I'd play bar/16 without close analysis. Bar/16 should be pretty robust to small modifications in the position.
