Assume this is true "Not all applications are made to target the general public.". Then maybe the problem is that the general public is n't given enough awareness that it isn't really targeted at them. They end up buyng a product that really wasn't for them anyway.
If I read between the lines, I would think you are suggesting that XG Premium (paid version) isn't really targeted at the public, something I think could be somewhat true.
With regards to Backgammon apps, the reviewers who biatch about the dice (and it is usually the casual general public) often seem to feel that if they pay for a BG application that it should not rig the dice. I have seen reviewers of BG applications say (paraphrased): "I used the free version of the application and the dice were rigged, so I bought a BG application and the programmers still rig the dice". Of course to people here on BGO the whole thing about dice is generally non sense, but that isn't so for the general public. The expectation for the general public may be a far cry from the expert user who actually know about Backgammon and bots.
