Good question. If you make the bot play very weak then it can really make bone headed moves, and it becomes too easy for a human. Even a weak human would realize the bot is stupid. And in the reviews for early bots that showed up on Palm-OS many years ago this was a big deal - some bots just didn't play well.

My observations from SHG and the players over many years since the adoption of two types of dice (red and yellow) is that fairness and interest in Backgammon among social players seems to be better achieved by adjusting the dice. However, those players still wish to have a competitive match with another human.

You want the casual human to feel like they are being challenged but at the same time not make them feel that the bot is taking advantage of the situation.
