The REAL difference between Intermediate and Open

In the US these days there are only 3 divisions, and that assumes enough novices/beginners show up for that lowest division.

The entry fees per tournament vary, but I think the following answers your question:

Ratio of entries fees in Open/Intermediate typically between 2 and 2.5.

Ratio of entry fees in Intermediate/Novice typically between 3 and 4.

I've noticed what you mention -- that in some European events there are two Open divisions, sometimes the higher entry one called "Masters". We don't have enough players for that here. (We have a side event called "Masters" which is mostly played the day before the Open. It is higher entry fee with slightly long matchlength but single elimination. Usually there is a corresponding Amateur/Limited event with lower entry fees and usually a subjective skill-level cutoff.)
