How much easier?

That's a fair question, and it occurred to me too. However, if Jason and Daniel are right about the answer, it sort of doesn't make any difference. That is, according to them, it's easier to reach 8-0 exactly than to get to 8-8 from 0-8 behind. A fortiori, it must be even easier to either reach 8-0 exactly or win the match as a shutout.

However, now that the question has been raised explicitly, it makes me wonder whether Jason and Daniel are correct, if we insist that the player that is tasked with reaching 8-0 must reach exactly 8-0. That is, it doesn't count if the player wins the match without reaching exactly the score of 8-0 at some intermediate stage. It seems to me that you'll be throwing away a lot of matches this way.

Of course, this also raises the question of the best way to phrase Bill's original question, given that we're trying to capture the spirit of what he was asking.
