Position 1. Hitting on the 3-point is thematic and I don't see a good 5 otherwise. I like bringing a direct builder into position rather than trying to improve an already OK advanced anchor. 8/3*, 10/8 = 10/3*

Position 2. Again, 6/4* looks thematic -- keeping opp from making an advanced anchor. Now there is no attractive 5 (I don't consider giving opp a good six from the bar 'attractive') so I'll hit the second checker while unstacking the heavy 6-point. 6/4*, 6/1*
