I play on the computer downstairs sometimes and invite people to watch, but they walk away saying they are not interested...

You mention you invited some players to watch you play on the computer but maybe not all the tenants of your complex know that someone is looking for backgammon players.

The first thing I would do is personally visit and chat with every single tenant of the complex - I am sure you will find at least one player, or at least encourage one or two to play with you. Also, try showing the game on an actual board instead of a computer screen.
