I agree with Bill here. A nice physical board is the best ad.

When people stop by - even when playing on the computer - don't ask them to watch, ask them to play! It's much more catchy if you play and thus force yourself to focus 100% on the game and the challenge of the decisions, rather than watching somebody else play (making decisions that might not be understood by the onlooker, in a tempo that might be way too fast for comprehension by a non-tournament player).

Casper's idea of trying to invite people to join a game at a public place is also the way to go. If you're weary of inviting people you don't know, into your own complex, then that really restrict your potential target audience! So go all in, and try to arrange a tournament somewhere in town where people are free to join. Make sure your flyer/invitation clearly states that the tournament welcomes beginners and that you would offer up help with rules, etc. to those that need it. You could even offer a 30 minute introduction before the tournament starts, for newcomers or people who have been out of the game for many years!

I have no idea what sort of places you could go for (never been to the US), but here in Denmark you could have tried a library, an other public activity space, or a local cafe, coffee shop, bar or restaurant. The latter could even be persuaded to offer up some free-roll prices - your tournament would typically attract a number of additional customers to their establishment, at a day of the week you agree on (typically they are happy if you choose a day that normally have low activity). If could be wine, liqueur, beer, gift certificate for a meal, etc. Just a little something that can be won for free, have a tremendous effect on attendance!

Depending on the attendance to such a introductory tournament (or a few of them), you can either choose to continue the same setting/place, or screen/invite people to come to your private complex and sort of start a local club there.
