I believe Rick's formulation is correct.

With 3 equally strong players, A is 1 to 1 to beat B, B is 1 to 1 to beat C, and A is 1 to 1 to beat C.

With Joe's formula, it would seem that A's chances to beat C are 1/2*1/2.
