Although not exhaustive by any means, Goulding's Backgammon with the Champions from around 1981-83 gave a good indication of who was considered at the top of the game at that time. I don't know if Snellings was playing then (he has posted here in the past so maybe he'll tell us) but I don't think he was close to his peak, nor in most of the public eye. Neither was Joe Sylvester, but he was soon to win the World Amateur title and start climbing the steps to the stage.
