'@3: I am not sure changing your gameplan and playing conservatively is the best way to protect a lead on the golf course.'
Often it is. Three stroke lead, one hole to play, narrow fairways with dense rough or an area marked out of bounds; hit an iron down the middle and avoid a potential disaster. Four or five stroke lead, two holes to play; the same can apply. In addition, you will sometimes have a shot that offers two approaches and often the conservative approach is correct, unless you are down and need to take risks to make up strokes quickly. Trying to hit over a water hazard, when laying up is more prudent, is an example of this.
'How would you use the cube, playing golf? (before the next hole or during the play on a given hole)'
You can use it for the whole match, hole-by-hole, or a combination of both, in which case you would have two cubes; a match cube and a hole cube. Match or medal play, it is a good addition. You can only double when it is your shot. One interesting variation in using the cube in hole-by-hole play is to have the player that owns the cube retain possession if the hole is halved. This leads to slightly more conservative doubling.
