I don't think you interpreted the first quote correctly. I believe the article author meant that in the opinion of many pundits the match was meaningless and Ollie was a bad guy. It makes his argument against concessions more meaningful if he feels both Woods and Molinari should have finished the hole.

Related to NFL cancelling single point PAT's, they tried to cancel kickoffs but the less-than-genius return specialists countered that by bringing the ball out anyway, often not making it back to the 20 (where they could have settled for it). NCAA's rule is even more biased against runbacks since the default position (if no runback) is the 25. Of course in either league you need to run it back if the kickoff doesn't make the endzone -- more likely in the NCAA than NFL.
