Better with better testimony

By happenstance I was close by as this exciting Championship division semi-finals match between Victor and John reached dmp. Observing that both players were dangerously close to time defaulting,I asked if they would want to continue the match without the clock (our tournament policy is "clocks on request", meaning that if either player in a match requests a clock, a clock must be used). Another TD director standing nearby affirmed that this was an acceptable action. Victor expressed a preference to continue with the clock - which I considered to be "on request"; therefore, the match continued with the clock in place.
I support a "live by the sword, die by the sword" attitude if a player chooses to impose a clock on his match and runs dangerously short of time. But in the case of these two outstanding players and intense competitors, it felt appropriate to at least offer them the opportunity to finish the match without the threat of time defaulting to a gut-wrenching loss, as well as the potential embarrassment of losing in this manner.
I have great admiration for the courage of both players in concluding their match under extremely tense conditions. They both showed a lot of class.
