Bob: In a large weekend tournament how mnay timeout forfeits do you think there actually are and what would be an acceptable number to have since you think the first number is too large?

Thanks for the queries. They caused me to think a little more deeply about the issue.

I don’t have any sense of the rate of forfeiture caused by timeouts. I have witnessed three in the very short time I have been using clocks, and I was under 10 seconds myself in another.

As to the rate that might be acceptable, I think that no timeouts is the right amount for most events. So that means we are down to a fraction of 1%. How does one in a thousand sound? Is two or five thousand better? IMO, a timeout should be significantly rarer than a backgammon!

Forfeiture is not the only problem caused by short delays and reserve times. Hurried, suboptimal, boring play is another.
