In tournaments I have attended in the past 5 years I think there have been about 10 timeouts. It is indeed much rarer than backgammons. Now games where a player has gone below 10 seconds reserve are not rare at all. I personally have been in probably more than 20. But avoiding time pressure is a huge change from what you originally said about avoiding time forfeiture.

It is difficut to state how much I disagree with your idea that use of clocks leads to boring play. Would it be more exciting for you to sit across from someone who regularly takes 2 - 5 minutes on 10 - 20 plays each match?
