Two Stage Timing

In Response To: Two Stage Timing (Bob Koca)

I think that the idea of being able to stop the clock after rolling cocked dice sounds fine in practice, but could have drawbacks. A player, very low on reserve time could, after a minimal shake (or none) deliberately roll into a mass of chequers. Dice cocked, he stops the clock, then gives the dice a nice, long (and for him, relaxing) shake - with the clock frozen of course. Perhaps he manages to roll cocked again. The tournament has to proceed. Where do you draw the line?

An analogy: In students written examinations, if a candidate has a disability that affects their ability to write, then they can be given extra time, or assigned an amanuensis to write the script. Conversely, if a student does not have a disability, but is simply slower at writing than most then they are indeed at a disadvantage - and the only way they can address this is to practice writing faster.

Equally, in bg tournaments, a TD can assign players with certain disabilities a longer delay time, as he sees fit - or dispense with clocks altogether. Those able bodied players who simply struggle to get the dice into the rolling area or won't stop shaking (and I'm probably referring to the dice here) do not really deserve extra time. The cack-handed should practice rolling.

Clearly, such players would be wise to keep at least a few seconds in reserve, but I think that the best way to deal with the possibility of them actually timing out in this way it is to allow a longer delay time - but preferably only near the end of a players reserve time, in the form of a secondary (last chance saloon) timing phase. The fact that most clocks currently in use for bg don't have this facility need not preclude its adoption in future. And at least some clocks can handle it - which is more than can be said of some of the new timing systems proposed in this thread.
