Achievers vs socialisers

I am not going to continue this conversation. Instead I will point you to an article of Richard Bartle where he states the different categories of players found in a MUD. Maybe you will find his views interesting.
http://www.mud.co.uk/richard/hcds.htm
2 of the categories are Achievers and socialisers. Since Mud games and backgammon are very different, we can only carry forward a relative comparison. Keep this in mind if you read the whole article. Now according to Bartle, "Achievers regard points-gathering and rising in levels as their main goal, and all is ultimately subserviant to this." The equivalent of achievers in backgammon would probably be players trying to maximise their winning chances.
Again according to Bartle, "Socialisers are interested in people, and what they have to say. Socialisers say things like:"What happened? I missed it, I was talking. Really? Oh no! Gee, that's terrible! Are you sure? Awful, just awful!" The equivalent of socialisers in backgammon would be chatty opponents. Now this is what Bartle says that happens when Achievers meet socialisers,
"Achievers merely tolerate socialisers. Although they are good sources of general hearsay on the comings and goings of competitors, they're nevertheless pretty much a waste of space as far as achievers are concerned. Typically, achievers will regard socialisers with a mixture of contempt, disdain, irritation and pity, and will speak to them in either a sharp or patronising manner. Occasionally, flame wars between different cliques of socialisers and achievers may break out, and these can be among the worst to stop: the achievers don't want to lose the argument, and the socialisers don't want to stop talking!"
