Bob: It is difficut to state how much I disagree with your idea that use of clocks leads to boring play. Would it be more exciting for you to sit across from someone who regularly takes 2 - 5 minutes on 10 - 20 plays each match?

Sorry, Bob, for the confusion. I did not mean to imply that I am against clocks. What I originally said was this:

Mike: As a newcomer to ABT events and clocks, I am perhaps unqualified to have a strong opinion. It is my sense, however, that the 12-second delay is too short, and that too many matches end because of time outs.

When clocks run low, players have little time for nuance. That’s what I was referring to in my follow-up message when I said boring play. If this is happening too often (whatever that subjective phrase means), then we should consider increasing reserve times or delays. I did not mean to say we should abandon clocks altogether.

BTW, no one has commented on my other notion that shorter matches deserve a longer time reserve:

Another observation is that reserve time should not be a linear function of match length. Current practice is to award 2 minutes per point linearly, so that a 13-point match has a 26-minute reserve, while 5-point match gets only 10. I think that the shorter matches should get an extra couple of minutes.

The idea is that the number of times a player might reasonably wish to ponder for a couple of minutes has much more variance in shorter matches. Adding a couple minutes to the time bank in shorter matches, would help to accomodate this variance.

Mike
