I understand that if players can't make money, they won't continue to play and so the rake must be fair.

If a backgammon server was the best one to ever come along, had everything players want and prefer (tough to do since there are so many tastes to please) then the server would have to study what a fair rake is, because to be that good, you have to pay for good connections (server hosting), have an ample staff to cover all aspects of being the best, and many, many other expenses, such as marketing costs, the cost of running an office, customer service department, pay for a gambling license in some jurisdicition where you would also likely be taxed on your income, maintenance, the staff to investigate for cheaters which is a time-consuming job, and more.

So one more question, would you prefer that a backgammon server started, again, for example, with a rake, let's say, of 4% and then later, once things can be evaluated, bring their rake down to 3% if they feel they can make money with 3%?

Or, would you feel upset if the rake began at 3% and when they evaluated it was not enough to make ends meet, they would raise it to 4%?
