Presumably the reason your match is clocked is so the tournament proceeds in a timely fashion. Valid reasons for centering the clock are: recording score/setting up between games, summoning director for a ruling, dice leaving the table, scheduled/allowed break.

I probably missed a couple, but taking the time to record (position, or even every play of the match) at least partially defeats the purpose of using the clock.

In my case when director comes around and acts perplexed that my match isn't over (and this has happened to me), I want to be able to look him/her square in the eye and say "we're playing with a clock" and that's that. (They chose the clock settings, afterall.) If I've been doing other things (like making ideal chit-chat, for example) with the clock not running, I don't have the right to be so firm in my convictions.
