Some people find it more entertaining to play for money. (Lottery tickets is another game where playing for real money adds to the entertainment value.)

If you look at backgammon purely as an investment, then a 20% rake is not a good deal. But looking at it as a form of entertainment, the cost may be quite reasonable.
