Speed Gammon Time Settings

Rew, I wrote that we RATE matches down to 0:10 and 1:40 for 5 points (not 0:10 and 2:00), so that's already a 20 second "improvement".
We ALLOW matches to be arranged with less time than that, but will just not rate them. However, no tournament directors so far has applied for any.
I guess it's very different from person to person what they feel is "speedy enough". Also not everyone think it should be a dexterity challenge, but rather a format where the tempo is kept high throughout the match. And not everyone think that the proper tempo for a speed match is the fastest that they are able to play.
You get some mechanical challenges (especially if using dicecups instead of a bafflebox), if you go too low (eg. 6 seconds per move), where players will cease to shake and roll properly. And you will be at a disadvantage when rolling mid-range doubles (which is by far the most difficult rolls to play in super-speed gammon).
I guess the way forward here, is very similar to chess, where you have different paces of speed play: Rapid, blitz and bullet! The majority of tournament players I suppose, will be satisfied with the current speed settings, but you can make other events for the ones that prefer to go even faster. My advice would be to make baffleboxes mandatory in those.

I played 5 4-point matches in a row at a speed tournament, without using a single second of match-time (on a 10 second delay). That was pushing it, but it could be done. It was a Swiss format, where your total unused time from each match, was used as a tie-breaker for even scores at the end of the tournament (Swiss correction).
