Falafel famously advises against too much focus on openings and replies in this post from 2010. I think he would make the same point more strenuously in regard to third-roll positions. Jeremy Bagai and David Levy, two very strong players who play in the same local tournament as I, echo Falafel’s advice. Both have recommended to me that I plug the other, “larger” holes in my game before I attempt to be perfect in the openings.

On the other hand, Nack Ballard, Stick, David Rockwell, and to a lesser extent, Neil Kazaross and MCG, all support deep study of the openings. (I am less sure about Neil and Matt because I think they recommend intense study of everything!) As you probably know, Nack Ballard and Paul Weaver are the authors of the top-rate Backgammon Openings, Book A, a text that covers only first-, second- and third-roll positions where the final roll is 31. Those guys are intensely focused on the openings!

This looks like a case of dueling experts. You get to do whatever you please, and back it up with the testimonial of a giant.
