You just think that winning ABT have no relationship with money. I think it is short-term thinking but in long run and backgammon is all about it isn't true IMO.
If you win ABT tour you become very well known player and other people will respect you and be affraid and will start to make errors OTB so you will win few more matches which mean more tournaments and more money.
Also there is few fine BG sites which publish name of ABT winners of the year (altogether with World Champions, European Champions, World Cup champions, Nordic Open winner etc.) like Chicago Point, Backgammon Galore, Gammonlife and so on so you will get better backgammon reputation in the whole word which means that you can find sponsors for high entry fee tournament much easier.
You wrote that Steve Sax usually have sponsors for such tournaments. Maybe one of the reasons is that he won ABT in 2002.
Come on Stick, go in LA and take your chances. We are with you.
