How do you estimate the gammons? Reference positions? A rule of thumb? Features of the position? Or simply seeing the fourth point as a strong asset?

I see now nailing down the fourth point with the ace is similar to a 31 opening situation, creating a permanent asset with the only number available for the creating man. But sending back a second man is also tempting.
