Using a sandtimer instead of a clock

The Chronos II chess clock has hourglass timing. Each player starts with a short amount of time, and it moves to the other player during play. When your time runs out, you lose. It clearly provides a big incentive to play fast.

This could be simulated by a real sand timer if you can split the sand evenly.

It could be interesting in BG. (Using a Chronos, not a sand timer). I have no idea what a good initial time allowance would be.
