How automatic is the double at 3-away, 1-away, post Crawford?

It looks like you need to double because there are market losing sequences (31 hit followed by a 51 entry - you really want that to happen with the cube on 2). The trick to delay doubling, you need to know who you are playing. It used to be OK to attempt this, but nowadays I think you might aas well double directly.
