As long as the reader keeps in mind that the recommendations could be wrong, I think it's fine. Unfortunately that's a very tall task, particularly for a beginner/intermediate.

Also, does it matter which volume? The one covering the technical side (at least the part about races and bearoffs) is less out-of-date, isn't it?

Does this mean the market is ripe for a new (modern) book, similarly structured?
