The second thing is that recording own matches would slow things down hugely.

I want to be on the record disagreeing with this. Obviously it will vary from person to person, but it's not the case that it is true across the board.

From time to time I have recorded my own matches while playing, and I believe it had a quite marginal effect on the time taken. Hal Heinrich used to record virtually all his matches as he played them, and from my observation it seemed to slow things down not at all.

As far as objective data, I only have this. There's a match I had with with Falafel somewhere online, which I recorded as we played. This was played with clocks, and although I did feel a bit time pressured at the end, I think that the recording added only about 10% to the time I took. I don't think Falafel minded, and he was glad to have the match record.
