Backgammon Ethics

Probably the most important consequence of recording moves in chess is that it gives everyone a chance to analyze and learn from the games played and to advance the theory. The question becomes, is that as significant a benefit in backgammon? Yes, there are all sorts of positions that come up during a game that benefit other players during analysis but does it really advance theory? I'm inclined to think not. This doesn't mean games should not be recorded (there are other reasons for doing so) but that it might not be as valuable to the community as a whole. But for the individual playing it could have a tremendous benefit as you'd get to see your moves and perhaps even figure out where your reasoning went wrong. So even if recording moves is not made mandatory perhaps it should be allowed (some tournament rules forbid it, correct?) and even encouraged.
