What, if anything, can other games teach us?

For me, chess was the "gateway game" leading to a lifetime of backgammon addiction. I think chess a good way to get started in games in general. I would imagine Go is also a good lead-up to playing backgammon, and maybe also vice versa, because of the pattern recognition aspect. I like Go, but haven't played it in years, and never got up to speed with it.
But for me, the other skill that is most synergistic with backgammon is playing a musical instrument. I find that the level and quality of focus and concentration that music and backgammon require is very similar. Has anyone else found this to be true in their experience?
