I recently mentioned an analogy between backgammon and playing a musical instrument.

Nack Ballard and David Rockwell have suggested that the concept of tewari from go can be applied to backgammon. In the same thread, David Rockwell made some interesting general comments about transferring concepts from one game to another.

In general I don't think that there are too many concepts from other well-known games that will directly help your backgammon skill all that much. But studying games in general can help you understand better why the rules of backgammon are the way they are. In this regard, I highly recommend that book Characteristics of Games. I constantly see people suggesting changes in the rules, either of backgammon itself or of the conduct during a tournament, with very little understanding of the impact of their suggested changes.
