What, if anything, can other games teach us?

I play two games with some moderate level of seriousness: backgammon and racing small sailboats. The two have a lot more in common than you might think. On a small lake, you can never be sure what the wind is going to do next, so you play the odds. Unless you're way behind, then you might take a flyer and hope for the best.
I've learned from both activities to not get upset when an unlucky roll or wind shift causes me to fall behind, and to maximize the benefits provided by a good roll or favorable shift. I've learned the utility of having a flexible game plan, i.e. stay in the middle of the course instead of committing to one side or the other.
Now if only i could figure out how to use the cube to win those races when I'm way out in front...
