2nd IBC Matches - Saturday and Sunday

I don't mean to be off topic at all, but I was curious about something. I've usually associated backgammon with Middle Eastern states. I still do see a few Turkish players regularly in these tournaments. However, Mochy is quite prominent in instruction and this tournament featured Shimodaira Kenji and Watanabe Yuya. I'm really curious how Japanese players have risen to such a forefront in the field.

Please note that I'm not trying to be disrespectful. Rather, I'm a student of the Japanese language and I work in an industry where I come into contact with loads of Japanese pop culture items. Therefore, I was just curious since I don't otherwise see backgammon in the main stream Japanese media a whole lot.
