Using a sandtimer instead of a clock

Each time that I've attempted to use a sand timer in person, there seems to be a debate over whether or not a certain amount of sand remains in the timer. Of course, there's always the problem if some minute grains of sand haven't passed through even though it's not moving any more. Not only would you need a good timer to play with, but you'll also need a very mature partner if the play doesn't have a referee.
