In the terms that you've posed it, the idea behind priming is that it's a prelude to attacking. Once you have a six-prime, your attack is all but guaranteed to succeed. If you attack now while your opponent is weak, then you'll probably win more gammons when your attack succeeds, but your attack is more likely to fail.
This line of thinking "reduces" the problem to estimating wins versus gammons, which of course is still a tricky problem in itself.
