Interesting ruling in San Antonio...

I had mixed emotions here. I thought the ruling was consistent with the letter of the law in the existing ABT rules -- thus, I supported Patrick's ruling and, of course, the Rules Committee of select prominent players upheld his ruling. I did not have the opportunity after the fact at the tournament to discuss their deliberations with them, so I do not know their basis of action.
However, I think the circumstance highlighted the occasional deficiency in the existing rules. I've not read the entire document, but certainly the Simborg/Bower/Horton proposed rules better address this type of circumstance. We must be careful though of unintended consequences, there are ways to game the system -- as Chiva and others have pointed out, and/or alluded to, it might be advantageous, as an example, for a stronger player to 'inadvertently' play to a longer match length, etc. Penalties for such gamesmanship when proven should be severe.
I know those players who passionately disagreed with the ruling appreciated the fact that we felt bound by the rules we were playing with at the tournament. We should all strive to appropriately refine and amend the rules when we find them deficient. Hopefully, we act accordingly with this rule. A number of very good suggestions have been made here on the forum -- that is a good start.
