Screw you. Screw you. Screw you. I like you. Screw you.

Why do people get so defensive. Like UBK's recent post which was basically asking 'what happened' I bet more than the one person who replied took offense. I read it strictly as a fact finding post. Here none of you have the slightest idea why I went through this match but assumed it was somehow to belittle his accomplishment. Insert flying leap here: ______________________ :

CMC who was the first person to reply knows I have done this before. He told me on GG someone was playing a very low PR and wondered if it was legit. I told him I didn't have any idea but would be happy to take a look at the match(es) if he could send me any. He sent at least one, maybe more (?), I don't remember. I went through every play just as I did with MCG's match picking out the real decisions and trying to get a comprehensive view of whether or not the match was difficult. What I found there is that almost any time the player had a real decision to make he botched it. Or, the difference in two totally different plays was so small it wouldn't affect his PR. So the player may have scored a really low PR but anything that wasn't a 'next' he messed up.

What's my reasoning for doing things like this? What's the reason for me doing any of the many odd things I do with backgammon. It certainly isn't the most efficient use of my time if it's learning I'm looking for but guess what? I'm sure by going through matches this way I pick up on some things. Guess what else? I give backgammon lessons and believe it or not it helps me a veritable shit ton to look at other people's mistakes because I don't always know what I should be giving lessons on. People make mistakes that I wouldn't even consider so it's hard for me to know that a certain area of the game needs covered if I would never see it as a decision myself.

I have done this with many matches and I've also found that the player's PR almost always goes up rather than down. I'm only talking about low PRs to begin with as I have little interest in doing it with high PRs where it would need a zillion rollouts. In playing out the match myself, seeing where I would have made errors, looking at all the analysis, rolling it out, I can then also see where maybe XG even changed its mind.

The fact that I get to call MCG a donkey is simply the onion at the bottom of my Gibson. Quick review of a couple things in this thread.

Adam: I was there. MCG never once bragged to anyone about his accomplishment.

MCG doesn't talk. Maybe you'll get a mumble, a giggle, or a shoulder shrug but he's almost as full of it as I am. If you get him to talk he'll call me a donkey as quickly as I would call him a super fish. Humble my ass.

CMC: Regardless if there were not so many decisions in this match, MCG still had to make the right plays. Not everyone can do that.

I agree with this completely. If nobody has ever noticed I like to recognize accomplishments in the full. What I mean by that is understanding them for what they're actually worth. As I stated before, he could have played a 3 in a really tough match and blown me away or played a 3 in a match that was so simple I'd call him an uberdonk.

A better example might be Roger Federer. In case anyone missed it, I think he's the best tennis player ever. Even so, I realize his French Open win in 2009, the only time he won the French, is heavily tainted. (to me) He didn't have to play Nadal and I wish he would have won by having to play him.

DGArnold: I wondered why would you go through all that trouble and then make an effort to point out bad moves.

I did not do that to point out *bad moves*. I pointed out moves that I considered worthy of a decision. I did mention the error in his last game noting it was a 'lazy error' meaning that I know that MCG knows what's right there every day of the week and just played the first reasonable play he saw. We all do this at some point and should try to be more aware of it because there's no excuse for it. That innocent .028 error took his overall PR from a 1.01 to a 1.11. That's huge when you're playing so low.

Glad I was gone a couple of days so people got to post. In my delusional world I thought people might be interested in seeing what plays I thought were tough, I thought they might like the match file with all the rollouts included, I thought that bringing up that MCG played a 1 PR again couldn't possibly be bad PR for him. Guess I was wrong.
