And how, Phil, if you segregated the best players from the amateurs, would those "pros" remain "pros?" As things stand today, it's almost impossible for anyone, no matter what their PR, to make a living playing in tournaments. If you forced all of the best players to compete solely with one another, every pro would starve. Remember, backgammon does not have sponsors/added money the way most other sports do.

Perhaps the unease you are feeling is due to your belief that amateurs in any sport should be looking for ROI. Really? Don't you think that there are about 5 million golfers in the US who would be happy, every month or so, to pay $200 to participate in a tournament with the top pros? Don't you think that they would happily accept a ROI of $-199.99 for the experience?

Instead of promoting the belief among amateurs that they should be trying to make money in tournaments, why not simply work to get some sponsorship for our game? If we had that, with enough money to support a proper pro tour, your suggestions would make more sense.
