Memorizing reference positions

I basically agree with MCG. Despite von Neumann's incredible intellectual skills, it's not at all clear that they would have enabled him to become a 2.0 backgammon player.
It's an interesting question whether an extremely memory-intensive approach to backgammon can be successful. I mentioned elsewhere that perhaps one could develop a large number—several hundred, perhaps—of point-count systems to cover most common aspects of backgammon. My intuition is that this sort of approach is potentially the best route to sub-2.0 backgammon. However, it's hard to know, because nobody has made a serious effort to develop such a library of systems.
It might be possible to make a preliminary investigation into this question without actually laboriously constructing useful point-count systems, as follows. A library of point-count systems can be thought of as a piecewise linear approximation of optimal play. One could try to take one of the existing neural nets and see how well it can be approximated by a piecewise linear function. This may be easier said than done, though.
