I completely agree with David's post and thought of it myself when I looked at your problem I still think there is a little bit more to it than that. You note that after the best play, 6/4 6/off, we leave ourselves vulnerable to three immediate blotting numbers. [66 55 44] However, when we make the inferior play of 6/2(2) and follow it up with those same doublets (or double 3s) we often (21/36) arrive at the same position one roll down the road so the effect of these sequences is mostly nullified in comparison.

Also if you compare a roll of [63 53 43] after both plays it is better to have played 6/4 6/off.
