I agree with you that bg tournament attendance is declining. However I believe that this can be reversed along with bg popularity in general.

The solution can be found on Bob Koca's and rew's comment in this thread.

Backgammon cannot be a gambling game anymore (at least not mainly a gambling game) It needs to be promoted as a skills game like it is in Dennmark. This is the only way for it to survive and maybe thrive again. Having Superstars is very important as well.
